WHAT ARE FUNCTIONAL SCREENINGS? |

A Functional Movement Screen is a grading system created to assess and document functional movement patterns. By assessing these patterns, functional limitations and asymmetries are identified. Basic movement pattern limitations can reduce the effects of functional training and distort proprioception (the body's ability to know where it is at any given time). This reduction and distortion of movement can lead to injuries or further degradation of degenerated conditions. By identifying these movement limitations, we can setup a corrective program that can be integrated into any workout in a short period of time, decrease the risk of injury and abnormal wearing patterns on a joint. For athletes, this tool can be used to assist in improving the overall performance of that athlete by correcting asymmetries and making their movements during their sport activity more fluid. This can take seconds off of their running times, give a higher vertical leap to spike a volleyball, or increase the velocity of a pitch. For the general population, this tool can be used to aide in decreasing abnormal movements that can lead to degenerative changes throughout the body (i.e. hips, knees and low back). These areas over time degenerate and become arthritic mainly due to abnormal movement patterns, a disease process called degenerative joint disease. We can assist you in identifying these areas and give you a program that can better stabilize your patterns and help you to move more efficiently. A score of 12 or less on this test is a positive test indicating that the person is at risk for injury. If you score a 12 or less, it is recommended that you receive further treatment from our staff of physical therapists. Once you have been treated and rescreened, a corrective program for home use will be implemented. Our initial functional screen can be performed in as little as 8-10 minutes and is performed at no cost (appointments must be made in advance and are limited). Subsequent training sessions related to movement correction training will be approximately 30 minute sessions at $40 per session. Re-screens are $20 per screen with all results sent to your physician of choice. If physical therapy is indicated, we participate in most major medical plans and can have you evaluated within 48 hours of your screen. All subsequent screens as a physical therapy patient are a part of your therapy program. We also offer personal training in one hour blocks. During this time, we will assess your strength deficits and work on improving your overall mobility, strength and endurance. Each one hour session is $65 and it is recommended that you are seen for a minimum of 3 sessions to receive the greatest benefit. |
